Oil seals ride on rotating shafts to keep crankcase oil in and debris out. Once the lip hardens or cracks, you'll see oil misting around the PTO or flywheel end, and a leaking seal will quickly take out bearings that cost far more than the seal itself. Always install with the garter spring facing the oil side and lubricate the lip before assembly.
